Exception for Limited Recreational Operations

Recreational flyers are exempt from Part 107 if they follow specific rules: fly for recreation only, follow CBO safety guidelines, keep below 400 ft in uncontrolled airspace, and pass the TRUST test.

Remote ID for Recreational Drones

All drones over 0.55 lbs must have Remote ID capability, even for recreational use. You can use a Standard Remote ID drone, a broadcast module, or fly in an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA).

Step 1: Take the TRUST Test (30 min)

Visit an FAA-approved test administrator (free): Pilot Institute, UAV Coach, or The Drone Racing League
Complete the interactive training module (teaches as you go)
Pass the test (untimed, open-book, can retry questions)

Step 2: Register Your Drone (10 min)

Go to faadronezone.faa.gov and create an account
Register each drone over 0.55 lbs ($5 per registration, valid 3 years)
Label your drone with the FAA registration number (visible on exterior)
