Part 61Certification: Pilots, Flight Instructors, and Ground Instructors

14 CFR 61.195 — Flight Instructor Limitations and Qualifications

Limits flight instructors to 8 hours of instruction per day and sets qualification requirements for various training activities.

Regulation Text

A flight instructor may not conduct more than 8 hours of flight training in any 24-consecutive-hour period. A flight instructor may not endorse a student pilot for solo flight unless the instructor has given that student the training required for the endorsement and considers the student prepared for solo flight. A flight instructor must hold the appropriate category, class, and instrument rating for the aircraft and type of training being given.

Note: This is an excerpt. Refer to the full regulation in eCFR for the complete text.

Plain-English Explanation

Flight instructors are limited to 8 hours of actual flight instruction per day to prevent fatigue. They must hold the right ratings for what they are teaching and can only endorse students they have personally trained and evaluated. CFIs also have specific requirements for endorsing practical tests and signing off solo flights. This regulation protects both the instructor and the student.
