Definition

A standing atmospheric wave generated when stable air flows over a mountain range. Mountain waves can produce severe to extreme turbulence, especially in rotor zones below the wave crest.

Why Mountain Wave Matters for Pilots

Weather concepts like Mountain Wave appear frequently on both FAA and EASA knowledge exams. More importantly, understanding Mountain Wave helps pilots make sound go/no-go decisions and avoid hazardous conditions in flight. Weather-related accidents remain a leading cause of general aviation incidents.
