British Airways Pilot Interview & Assessment Prep
What the British Airways pilot selection actually looks like in 2026 — the A380 sim profile, the cut-e/Aon tests, the competency themes, and the Speedbird cadet scheme. Sourced from BA's own pages, the official Speedbird FAQ, and first-hand candidate reports.
The Direct Entry process, stage by stage
BA runs one application at a time across Mainline / Euroflyer / CityFlyer. Official stage order (careers.ba.com/hiring-process):
- ✈1. Online application + 'motivation to join British Airways' statement.
- ✈2. Pre-recorded video interview (HireVue-style) — communication, motivation, fit.
- ✈3. Technical/capacity assessment — the computer-based EAGLE 'Flight Capacity' test: working under increasing workload.
- ✈4. Group exercise at Waterside (BA HQ, Harmondsworth, near Heathrow).
- ✈5. Competency interview — 45–60 min panel: CV + STAR competencies + technical scenarios.
- ✈6. Simulator assessment — currently the A380 full-flight sim, two candidates flying together, then a holding pool.
- ✈7. Offer + pre-employment checks (CRC, 5-year employment check, BA medical, security) — BA states this phase 'typically takes 12–16 weeks'.
- ✈Re-application: fail at screening/video/capacity/assessment → reapply after 6 months; fail the SIM → 12-month freeze across all three BA entities (candidate-reported consensus).candidate-reported
The online tests & psychometrics
BA's testing vendor is cut-e (Aon). The most BA-specific element is the EAGLE capacity test.
- ✈cut-e / Aon suite: numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, spatial/abstract reasoning, and the Aon 'Work-Related Behaviour' personality module.
- ✈EAGLE / 'Flight Capacity' test: a game-based simulated cockpit — spatial orientation, hand-eye coordination, divided attention, multitasking and reaction time (respond to ATC, monitor TCAS, manage a system issue, track traffic). This is the single most distinctive BA test.
- ✈Candidates report the tests are adaptive (harder as you do well) — plausible, not BA-confirmed.candidate-reported
- ✈Prep: practise cut-e/Aon-style tests, rehearse multitasking/capacity games, and sharpen mental maths (speed/distance/fuel).

The A380 simulator assessment — the real profile
The strongest first-hand gouge. The sim is graded heavily on CRM, not raw stick-and-rudder. Quote from a BA candidate (PPRuNe): "If you stick to aviate, navigate, communicate and can fly a half-decent ILS raw data, you'll have no issues. Even if you can't, a GA is acceptable."
- ✈Aircraft: A380 full-flight sim (switched from the B747; A320 used occasionally on availability).
- ✈Structure: ~90-min classroom pre-brief, ~4 hrs in the sim with a mid-break, ~15-min debrief. Two candidates: each is PF for one sector and PM for the other (~45 min each).
- ✈Profile: a short route — SID → airways → STAR → approach. All raw data, manual thrust, A→B. The moving MAP is removed to test situational awareness/workload; autopilot is available only above transition.
- ✈You're given a 4–5 page briefing pack with pitch & power settings and profiles for take-off, approach and landing — learn these cold; you are fully briefed before you fly.
- ✈They inject a non-technical disruption en route (e.g. medical emergency, an unavailable airport, deteriorating weather, or a minor system snag) — they assess your decision to continue/divert/go-around, not raw handling.
- ✈Prep sources put roughly 70% of the grading on CRM — briefing, task-sharing, supporting your sim partner, workload management — plus basic handling and professional standards/knowledge.candidate-reported
- ✈Only one facility near LGW preps the A380 sim — a gotcha for candidates only current on the A320.candidate-reported
The competency / panel interview
45–60 min, STAR method, panel (training captain + HR). BA does not publish its question bank — the examples below are reported by candidates and prep sources, not BA-official, and should be treated as themes to prepare, not a script.
- ✈Competency themes BA probes: professionalism & standards, leadership, communication, situational awareness, teamwork, decision-making under pressure, resilience, and BA-specific motivation (not generic 'I love flying').
- ✈'Why British Airways?' — show genuine brand knowledge: BA's 'connecting Britain with the world' identity, fleet/network awareness, and why BA over a competitor. BA references the TDODAR decision model.
- ✈'Why should British Airways choose you for their team of pilots?'candidate-reported
- ✈'You're Pilot Monitoring on approach and the flying Captain isn't following stabilised-approach criteria at 1,000 ft — what do you do?'candidate-reported
- ✈'What happens during an engine failure after V1 on the A320?'candidate-reported
- ✈'You make a significant error during a flight — how do you handle it?'candidate-reported
- ✈Fleet/technical (e.g. 787 vs 777 differences; max operating altitude; 'tell us everything you know about the A320') and a security scenario (unscreened baggage found in flight).candidate-reported
Direct Entry requirements (2025 adverts)
- ✈Short-haul A320 First Officer: min 500 hrs on the A320, flown the type in the last 12 months.

- ✈ICAO English: BA's long-haul/Mainline page lists Level 6 preferred; some adverts state Level 4 minimum — confirm per the specific live advert.candidate-reported
Speedbird Pilot Academy — the fully-funded cadet route
From BA's official Speedbird FAQ (correct as of April 2026). BA is the only UK airline offering a fully-funded cadet scheme.
- ✈Fully funded by BA: £21M investment, 200 places. BA covers flight training, accommodation during flight school, the initial Class 1 medical, and the type rating.
- ✈You earn a food & subsistence allowance during flight school (not a salary); a pilot salary starts when you join as an employee post-flight-school. Starting salary: £37,081 p.a. plus allowances.
- ✈The course produces a 'frozen' ATPL (full ATPL ground school + CPL/IR) — NOT an MPL. Having passed even one EASA/CAA ATPL exam already DISQUALIFIES you.
- ✈70-week integrated, residential course at FTEJerez (Spain) or Skyborne (UK). Ground school: first-series pass, 85% average, ≤3 resits; first-series CPL & IR pass. 6-year short-haul freeze after, based at Heathrow (BA) or Gatwick (Euroflyer).
- ✈Eligibility: age 17–58 (18 by 1 Jan 2027); 6 GCSEs A–C/4–9 including Maths, English Language and a Science; IELTS 5.5 before training starts; obtain UK CAA Class 1; right to work in the UK without sponsorship.
- ✈3-stage selection: (1) online assessments + speaking activity; (2) flight-school stage — psychometrics + in-person group exercise + online interview; (3) BA stage in person at Waterside — group exercise + multitasking assessment. You can reach the flight-school stage a maximum of 3 times.
- ✈Candidates report the BA stage uses a 'speed-dating' format (~8 candidates rotating between ~8 assessors) — candidate-reported, not BA-confirmed.candidate-reported
