Cathay Pacific Pilot Interview & Assessment Prep
A founder-reviewed, source-flagged walkthrough of Cathay Pacific's pilot hiring in 2025-26 — Cadet Pilot Programme and Direct Entry — covering each stage, the cut-e/Aon online tests, the full-flight sim assessment, interview themes and requirements.
Selection process, stage by stage
Cathay runs a multi-stage funnel: online application and tests, an HR/video interview, then a final in-person assessment at Cathay City in Hong Kong (travel assistance is offered to shortlisted overseas candidates).
- ✈Stage 1: Online application plus online aptitude tests and a personality questionnaire (cut-e / Aon suite).
- ✈An ICAO English Language Proficiency check is part of eligibility (Level 4 or above required).
- ✈Stage 2: HR interview, roughly 25-40 minutes, conducted over Microsoft Teams.candidate-reported
- ✈Final stage held in person at Cathay City, Cathay's Hong Kong head office; typically a simulator assessment day and a panel interview day.candidate-reported
- ✈Final assessment also covers a pre-employment HKCAD Class 1 medical, background check (including criminal records) and drug screening (safety-sensitive role).
- ✈Candidate debriefs report the sim and panel interview running over two in-person days for some cohorts.candidate-reported
Requirements and eligibility
Cathay hires both ab-initio cadets and experienced Direct Entry pilots. Licence and hour thresholds differ sharply between the routes.
- ✈Cadet: minimum 18 years old with the right to live and work in Hong Kong or the Chinese Mainland (IANG/TTPS candidates welcome).
- ✈Cadet English: e.g. IELTS 6.0+ (Listening 6+, Speaking 6+), TOEIC 800+, or TOEFL iBT 80+, plus strong secondary-school English and Maths/Science.
- ✈Second Officer (Direct Entry): minimum 250 flying hours; 1,000 hours plus Multi-Crew Cooperation preferred.
- ✈First Officer (Direct Entry): minimum 1,500 total hours (3,000 preferred), including minimum 500 P1 (max 250 of which may be P1 U/S).
- ✈Direct Entry licence: ICAO ATPL, or CPL with Multi-Engine Instrument Rating and same-state ATPL exam credits — obtained without exemption or conversion.
- ✈FO recency: 500 hours (250+ as P1/P1 U/S) in the preceding 5 years, or 100 sectors in the preceding 5 years.
- ✈All routes require a valid Class 1 Medical, ICAO English Level 4+, and ability to meet flight-deck reach requirements.
- ✈Successful pilots may be assigned to any Cathay fleet: A321neo, A330, A350, B777 or B747.

Online tests and psychometrics (cut-e / Aon)
Cathay's online stage uses the cut-e (now Aon) assessment suite. Vendor and candidate sources name the test types below; exact item counts and timings can change between cycles.
- ✈Vendor is cut-e / Aon — speeded, adaptive tests rather than traditional long-form psychometrics.candidate-reported
- ✈Numerical reasoning (Aon 'scales numerical'): tables/charts with true / false / cannot-say statements under tight time pressure.candidate-reported
- ✈Verbal reasoning (Aon 'scales verbal'): true / false / cannot-say judgements from unseen text passages.candidate-reported
- ✈Logical/abstract reasoning and applied-numeracy / maths items reported in the battery.candidate-reported
- ✈Spatial orientation and reaction-time / multitasking tasks aligned with flying aptitude.candidate-reported
- ✈Personality questionnaire; candidates also report a Hogan-style personality measure used in the wider process.candidate-reported
- ✈Cut-e item counts and 12-minute-style limits cited by prep vendors are indicative, not airline-published — treat as guidance.candidate-reported
Simulator assessment day
Direct Entry candidates fly a full-flight simulator. The aircraft type is assigned about a week ahead so you can study the profile; assessors grade airmanship and CRM, not type-perfect handling.
- ✈Sim type assigned roughly 7 days before the assessment so you can prep the profile.candidate-reported
- ✈Reported types used include B747, A330, B777-300 and A321neo, often matched to your Boeing/Airbus background.candidate-reported
- ✈Profile reported to cover takeoff and cleanup, turns and navigation, ILS approach, go-around, and an engine-fire scenario.candidate-reported
- ✈Graded areas (per candidate sources): adaptation/learning, CRM and communication, decision-making, instrument flying, and spatial orientation.candidate-reported
- ✈Assessors emphasise composure under pressure and applying knowledge in an unfamiliar aircraft over flawless execution.candidate-reported
- ✈Hand-flown raw-data work is common — expect to fly without full automation crutches.candidate-reported
Interview themes and reported questions
Expect a competency/HR interview plus, for Direct Entry, a technical/panel element with a Captain present. Example questions below are candidate-reported, not an official question bank.
- ✈'Tell me about yourself and your career to date.'candidate-reported
- ✈'Why Cathay Pacific?' and 'What do you know about Cathay?' (history, fleet, routes).candidate-reported
- ✈Cadets asked what they know about the Cadet Pilot Programme (training facilities, structure) and why they want to be a pilot.candidate-reported
- ✈Relocation and Hong Kong cost-of-living readiness, family/dependents plans, and notice period.candidate-reported
- ✈Technical themes reported: high-speed flight, meteorology, icing, engine theory and aircraft performance.candidate-reported
- ✈Panel typically includes a Captain and an HR representative.candidate-reported
Cadet Pilot Programme and funding
Cathay's flagship ab-initio route trains zero-time candidates to Second Officer. It is notably fully company-funded.
- ✈Programme runs roughly 55-60 weeks across ground theory, flight training and multi-crew sim training.
- ✈Ground theory delivered in Hong Kong in partnership with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).
- ✈Flight training conducted at Flight Training Adelaide (Australia) or AeroGuard in Phoenix, Arizona (USA).
- ✈Multi-crew simulator phase completed back at Cathay City in Hong Kong.
- ✈Cathay covers 100% of training costs — prep/vendor sources describe it as no loan and no service bond.candidate-reported
- ✈Graduates return as Second Officers, then complete the Multi-Crew Cooperation course before line flying.
