Online Tests & Psychometrics

Personality and leadership assessments precede the interview. These are personality measures, not IQ/aptitude tests.

  • Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI): measures 'bright-side' traits (Adjustment, Ambition, Sociability, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Prudence, Inquisitiveness, Learning Approach).candidate-reported
  • Hogan Development Survey (HDS): measures 'dark-side' traits under pressure (Excitability, Skepticism, Cautiousness, Reservation, Leisure, Boldness, Mischievousness, Imaginativeness).candidate-reported
  • 'Becoming United' / Leadership Inventory: assesses leadership potential, classifying responses as Limiter, Neutral, or Enabler across traits like Adaptability, Confidence, Learning Orientation and Willingness to Lead.candidate-reported
  • Candidates report the behavioral interview questions are reportedly informed by the Hogan results.candidate-reported
  • Framed by prep vendors as measuring 'occupational personality' — how you relate to others, handle stress, and lead — rather than technical knowledge.candidate-reported

Panel Interview & Technical Scenario

An in-person panel split into a behavioral hour and a technical/scenario hour.

  • Panel is typically one HR representative and one United pilot (Captain); sometimes a third pilot observes.candidate-reported
  • Format: 'Tell me about yourself' followed by ~5 TMAAT (Tell Me About A Time) behavioral questions, a short break, then the technical portion.candidate-reported
  • Technical portion is a line-oriented scenario: you are the new First Officer and the Captain conducts a briefing.candidate-reported
  • Topics include fuel and holding calculations, descent planning (3-to-1 rule), weather decision-making, SIDs/STARs, alternates and non-normal procedures.candidate-reported
  • Reported technical Q: 'When would you need a takeoff alternate, and what are the requirements?' (e.g., within ~1 hour at single-engine cruise).candidate-reported
  • Reported technical Q: 'What is the tower's NORDO light-gun signal to be cleared to land?' (steady green).candidate-reported
  • Candidates report a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere that emphasizes your thought process and communication over trivia.candidate-reported

Reported Interview Questions (Behavioral / TMAAT)

Candidate-reported examples — prepare STAR-format stories, not memorized answers.

  • Tell me about a time you handled a problem creatively.candidate-reported
  • Tell me about a time you had a problem with a subordinate.candidate-reported
  • Tell me about a time you didn't hit it off with someone you flew with.candidate-reported
  • Tell me about a time you made a decision without all the information.candidate-reported
  • Tell me about a time you had to change your communication style.candidate-reported
  • What would you consider the high point of your career so far?candidate-reported
  • What other airlines have you applied to / heard from? (United reportedly expects to be your first choice.)candidate-reported
  • What would you do if another company called in six months?candidate-reported

Entry Pathways: Aviate & Military

Beyond direct entry, United runs a cadet-to-flight-deck pipeline and a military program.

  • United Aviate is the program offering a conditional job offer (CJO) as a United First Officer upon acceptance.
  • Aviate entry points: United Aviate Academy (zero-time, Phoenix AZ, Cirrus fleet), professional flight-training organizations, the Experience-Build point (R-ATP CFIs / Part 135), and the United Express (UAX) point for pilots who have completed IOE.
  • Aviate transition to United mainline requires accumulating 1,200 hours PIC at a participating United Express carrier or Part 135 operator.candidate-reported
  • ATP Flight School is a participating partner and reports placing 700+ pilots with United Express carriers via the pathway.candidate-reported
  • United Military Pilot Program: no flight-hour minimums and no ATP certificate required to apply — 'military wings are your credential.'
  • Military eligibility: currently on active duty (incl. active reserves TAR/FTS/AGR), currently flying manned aircraft, and 12+ months from separation/availability date.
  • Military candidates can receive a conditional job offer while still on active duty, with a 'Buddy program' mentor pairing.
  • In 2026, the starting rate for new-hire United First Officers is reportedly $125.52 per flight hour.candidate-reported
