FAA Figures 32 and 33Airplane weight and balance tablesFAA-CT-8080-2H · Sport, Recreational, Private & Remote Pilot supplement
How to read it: Figure 32 gives the moments for occupants, baggage and fuel; Figure 33 is the moment-limits table. Add the weights and moments, then check the total moment against the limits for that gross weight.

  1. Question 1 · Private Pilot

(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figures 32 and 33.) Which action can adjust the airplane's weight to maximum gross weight and the CG within limits for takeoff? Front seat occupants: 425 lb Rear seat occupants: 300 lb Fuel, main tanks: 44 gal

    • A.Drain 12 gallons of fuel.
    • B.Drain 9 gallons of fuel.
    • C.Transfer 12 gallons of fuel from the main tanks to the auxiliary tanks.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct: B. Drain 9 gallons of fuel.

From Figure 32: empty 2,015 lb (moment/100 1,554); front seats 425 lb x 85 in = 361.3; rear seats 300 lb x 121 in = 363.0; 44 gal main fuel 264 lb (198). Total 3,004 lb, 54 lb over the 2,950 lb maximum. At 6 lb per gallon, draining 9 gallons removes exactly 54 lb: 35 gal = 210 lb, moment 158, giving 2,950 lb and moment/100 2,436.3, inside the Figure 33 limits of 2,422 to 2,499 at 2,950 lb (CG about 82.6 in). Draining 12 gallons would leave the airplane below, not at, maximum gross weight, and transferring fuel to the auxiliary tanks does not reduce weight at all (still 3,004 lb).
