Question 1 · Private Pilot
From the cockpit, this marking confirms the aircraft to be
- A.on a taxiway, about to enter runway zone.
- B.on a runway, about to clear.
- C.near an instrument approach clearance zone.
Show answer and explanation
Correct: B. on a runway, about to clear.
The image is a runway boundary sign: yellow background with a black graphic of the runway holding position marking, two solid lines and two dashed lines. AIM 2-3-9 says it faces the runway and is seen by the pilot exiting the runway, as a cue for when the aircraft is clear of the runway. Seen from the dashed-line side (the runway side), with the solid lines ahead, you are on the runway about to clear it. A pilot on a taxiway about to enter a runway would see the solid-line side and a red runway holding position sign. An ILS critical area boundary sign shows a different, ladder-like graphic.
