(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 2.) If an unmanned airplane weighs 33 pounds, what approximate weight would the airplane structure be required to support during a 30° banked turn while maintaining altitude?

How to read it: Enter the bank angle on the bottom axis, go up to the red curve and read the load factor on the left. The table on the left gives the exact values (60° = 2.0 G).
A

34 pounds.

B

47 pounds.

C

38 pounds.✓ Correct Answer

Explanation

In a level turn the structure must support the weight times the load factor. Figure 2 gives a load factor of 1.154 at 30 degrees of bank, so 33 lb x 1.154 = 38.1 lb, about 38 pounds (PHAK Ch. 5). 34 lb would correspond to a much shallower bank, and 47 lb (about 1.41 G) to a 45 degree bank.
