FAA Figure 9Control position for taxiFAA-CT-8080-2H · Sport, Recreational, Private & Remote Pilot supplement
How to read it: Quartering headwind: aileron UP on the upwind side (turn into the wind), elevator neutral. Quartering tailwind: aileron DOWN on the upwind side, elevator down (dive away).
A

Left aileron up, elevator neutral.✓ Correct Answer

B

Left aileron down, elevator neutral.

C

Left aileron up, elevator down.

Explanation

Area A in Figure 9 is a wind from ahead and to the left, a left quartering headwind. The Airplane Flying Handbook says that in a tricycle-gear airplane you turn the control wheel into the wind, which raises the aileron on the upwind (left) side so the wind cannot lift that wing, and hold the elevator neutral. Lowering the left aileron would let the wind get under the wing, and down elevator is used for tailwinds.
