Vertical Speed Indicator(VSI)

Definition

An instrument showing rate of climb or descent in feet per minute by measuring the rate of pressure change. There is inherent lag in the VSI, with instantaneous VSI variants reducing this delay.

Why Vertical Speed Indicator Matters for Pilots

Instrument knowledge is tested on every pilot certificate exam. Understanding how Vertical Speed Indicator works helps you interpret cockpit information correctly and recognize instrument failures before they become emergencies. This knowledge is especially critical for instrument-rated pilots flying in reduced visibility.
