Weather Radar

Definition

An airborne radar system that detects precipitation and turbulence ahead of the aircraft. Weather radar uses tilt, gain, and range controls to paint returns showing rain intensity in green, yellow, and red.

Why Weather Radar Matters for Pilots

Instrument knowledge is tested on every pilot certificate exam. Understanding how Weather Radar works helps you interpret cockpit information correctly and recognize instrument failures before they become emergencies. This knowledge is especially critical for instrument-rated pilots flying in reduced visibility.
