Frequently asked questions

What are the codes on my knowledge test report?

Since the FAA moved to the Airman Certification Standards (ACS), your Airman Knowledge Test Report lists an ACS code for every subject you answered incorrectly. A code names the area of the ACS you missed, not the exact question. Part 107 reports use UA codes (FAA-S-ACS-10B) and Private Pilot reports use PA codes (FAA-S-ACS-6C).

How do I read an ACS code like PA.I.C.K2a?

PA is the certificate (Private Pilot Airplane), I is the Area of Operation (Preflight Preparation), C is the Task (Weather Information), K means a knowledge element (R is risk management, S is skill) and 2a is the element number. UA.II.B.K1 reads the same way: Remote Pilot, Airspace, Airspace Operational Requirements, knowledge element 1.

Will the examiner ask about the codes I missed?

On a practical test, yes. The examiner's plan of action includes the subjects you missed on the knowledge test, and your instructor's endorsement must say you were trained on them (14 CFR 61.39). Part 107 has no practical test, so for drone pilots the codes are a study map: if you failed, they show exactly where to work before the retest.

I failed Part 107. When can I retake it?

After 14 calendar days (14 CFR 107.71), and you pay the test fee again (about $175 at PSI). Regulations is 48% of the test and Operations 25%, so codes in those two areas cost you the most points.
