Assessment Stages: What Cathay Pacific Tests

1. Online Application

Screening against the published licence, hour and right-to-work requirements. Cathay states applicants need the right to live and work in Hong Kong or the Chinese Mainland; IANG and TTPS holders are welcomed to apply.

Preparation Tips

  • Your ATPL exam credits must be from the same state as your licence, obtained without exemption or conversion
  • Log the P1 and multi-crew hours separately — the requirement is written in those terms
  • Check the recency clause: 500 hours (250 P1) in the preceding 5 years, or 100 sectors

2. Initial Interview

Cathay lists an initial interview before the simulator, so the first filter is conversational rather than technical.

Preparation Tips

  • Be ready to explain your reason for moving to Hong Kong specifically, not to Asia generally
  • Know your own logbook numbers to the hour

3. Simulator Assessment

Flown ahead of the panel interview. Cathay assigns successful candidates to any of its fleet types — A321neo, A330, A350, B777 or B747 — so the sim is not a type-specific audition.

Preparation Tips

  • Raw data handling and scan discipline matter more than type familiarity
  • Brief out loud: the assessors are watching crew coordination, not just flying

4. Panel Interview

Follows the simulator. Competency-style questioning against airline standards.

Preparation Tips

  • Structure answers with a decision and an outcome in them
  • Have examples that involve other crew, not only your own airmanship

5. ICAO English Test

A formal assessment; Level 4 is the published minimum.

Preparation Tips

  • Level 4 is a floor, not a target
  • Fluency under interruption is what the rating scale measures

6. Pre-employment Checks

HKCAD Class 1 medical, criminal background check and a drug test under HKCAD CAD373.

Preparation Tips

  • Confirm you meet HKCAD aeromedical policy before you travel
  • Flight deck reach requirements are assessed as part of fitness to fly

Knowing the Cathay Pacific process is step one. Being ready for the stages that actually cut people is step two.

Before a human reads your application there is an aptitude battery, and candidates consistently report it as the heaviest cull — pace, not difficulty. You can practise it here for free: timed papers generated fresh each run, plus a divided-attention drill that measures how much your performance degrades under load.
