KLM KLM Flight Academy

Read this before anything else

Two gates end most applications before the tests begin: you need EU nationality and you need to be fluent in Dutch. No exceptions are published for either.

Cost to you

Conditional KLM loan of €130,000+ (includes on-campus housing)

Current statusreported

Open — registration reported open through April 2027, selection runs year-round

The hard gates

Fail one of these and nothing else matters. Check them before you spend anything.

residencyOfficial

Dutch or other EU nationality required

languageOfficial

Fluent Dutch is mandatory — the programme is taught and selected in Dutch

ageReported

Minimum age 17 at course start; no published upper limit

educationReported

HAVO with Dutch, English, Maths B and Physics — or VWO, IB, Belgian ASO/TSO, German/French Gymnasium, or an HBO/WO route. A missing physics certificate can be repaired separately.

medicalReported

EASA Class 1 medical; height 157.5–203 cm; vision within −6 to +5 dioptres, no colour blindness

How selection actually runs

Run by Official

Aviation Medical Center (AMC), Amsterdam — a proprietary battery, not cut-e or COMPASS

Pre-selection (VO) Official

~2.5–3 h: three personality questionnaires, intellectual capacity, sensorimotor (eye-hand-foot, reaction)

Phase 1 (BCO) Official

~2 h: five computer tests — numerical, verbal, abstract/analytical and logical reasoning; result within about an hour

Phase 2 (SMO) Official

~2 h: multitasking, eye-hand coordination, spatial reasoning, concentration, vigilance

Phase 3 (KCO) Official

Psychological day: CV, biography and self-reflection submitted in advance, psychologist interviews, a one-to-one role-play with a professional actor, and a group collaboration exercise

Phase 4 (COVA) Reported

30–45 min admissions panel at Schiphol-East with KLM pilots and a purser, reviewing your entire selection dossier

Every phase is eliminatory Reported

You progress only by passing each stage in turn; the panel sees your full test record

The training

Licence Reported

Integrated frozen ATPL — NOT an MPL, so the licence travels if things change

Duration Reported

About 24 months in four phases (~9 months ATPL theory, then basic VFR, advanced IFR/ME/MCC, then type rating)

Location Reported

Groningen Airport Eelde, residential campus; DA40-NG and DA42-VI fleet

What happens afterwards

You join as Reported

First Officer at KLM Cityhopper (Embraer E175/E190/E195-E2) or KLM mainline — allocated by fleet need, not preference

Employment Official

Students sign a training agreement AND an employment contract with KLM at training start, under suspensory conditions

Command Reported

Cityhopper captain reported at roughly 5–8 years, seniority dependent

The money

The loan Reported

Conditional KLM loan of €130,000+, which since 2025 includes on-campus housing

Interest Reported

Interest-free until you enter KLM service; repayment then runs about 15 years

If you don't finish Reported

The loan is reported to be forgiven if training is not completed — except where you withdraw by choice. A guarantee fund covers you if you lose the medical or KLM cannot place you within five years.

Not covered Reported

The Class 1 medical (~€750) and your headset

How competitive it is

Intake Reported

About 72–80 students a year across four or five classes

Applications Reported

Roughly 600–1,200 a year for those seats — an acceptance rate in the single digits to low teens

Completion Reported

Around 95% of admitted students complete training — the selection does the filtering, not the course

The part you can actually train

Nationality and age are fixed. The aptitude battery, the group exercise and the competency interview are not — and that is where most candidates are lost, including strong ones. Our aptitude papers are generated fresh every run, and the divided-attention drill measures the thing capacity tests are actually built to find.
