(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-7D, Appendix 2, Figure 22.) You are considering a takeoff from a runway with a magnetic heading of 330°, and the tower reported winds are 290° at 25 knots. What would be the computed headwind component?

How to read it: Follow the arc for the wind speed to the line for the angle between wind and runway; read the headwind component vertically and the crosswind horizontally.
A

19 knots.✓ Correct Answer

B

25 knots.

C

16 knots.

Explanation

The wind from 290 degrees is 40 degrees off the runway heading of 330. The headwind component is 25 x cos 40 = 25 x 0.77 = about 19 knots (the crosswind is about 16 knots). 25 knots would be a wind straight down the runway.
