ifr navigationFAA-published sample question (IRA, Aug 2021)
The greatest DME indication error between actual ground distance and displayed ground distance occurs at
A
high altitudes far from the VORTAC.
B
high altitudes close to the VORTAC.✓ Correct Answer
C
low altitudes far from the VORTAC.
Explanation
DME measures slant range, the straight-line distance from the aircraft to the station, not horizontal ground distance (AIM 1-1-7). The difference is largest when the aircraft is high and close to the station; directly overhead, the DME shows the aircraft's height above the station. AIM 1-1-17 notes the difference increases with altitude and proximity to the NAVAID, so it is smallest at low altitude far from the VORTAC.
