(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 38.) Determine the total distance required to land over a 50-foot obstacle. Pressure altitude: 5,000 ft Headwind: 8 kts Temperature: 41°F Runway: Hard surface

FAA Figure 38Airplane landing distance tableFAA-CT-8080-2H · Sport, Recreational, Private & Remote Pilot supplement
How to read it: Read the row for the pressure altitude and temperature, then apply the notes: subtract 10 % per 4 knots of headwind, add 10 % per 60 °F above standard, and 20 % more for a dry grass runway.
A

837 feet.

B

956 feet.✓ Correct Answer

C

1,076 feet.

Explanation

At 5,000 feet and 41 degrees F (standard, so no temperature correction), Figure 38 gives 1,195 feet total to clear a 50-foot obstacle on a hard surface. Note 1 decreases the distance 10% for each 4 knots of headwind, so an 8-knot headwind is a 20% reduction: 1,195 x 0.80 = 956 feet. 1,076 feet corresponds to only a 10% reduction, and 837 feet to a 30% reduction.
