  1. Question 1 · Airline Transport Pilot

(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-7D, Appendix 2, Figure 22.) You are considering a takeoff from a runway with a magnetic heading of 330°, and the tower reported winds are 290° at 25 knots. What would be the computed headwind component?

    • A.19 knots.
    • B.25 knots.
    • C.16 knots.
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct: A. 19 knots.

The wind from 290 degrees is 40 degrees off the runway heading of 330. The headwind component is 25 x cos 40 = 25 x 0.77 = about 19 knots (the crosswind is about 16 knots). 25 knots would be a wind straight down the runway.
