14 CFR 91.155 — Basic VFR Weather Minimums
Specifies minimum flight visibility and cloud clearance requirements for VFR flight in each class of airspace.
Regulation Text
No person may operate an aircraft under VFR when the flight visibility is less, or at a distance from clouds that is less, than that prescribed for the corresponding altitude and class of airspace. Class A: not applicable (IFR only). Class B: 3 SM visibility, clear of clouds. Class C/D: 3 SM, 500 below, 1000 above, 2000 horizontal. Class E below 10,000: 3 SM, 500 below, 1000 above, 2000 horizontal. Class E at/above 10,000: 5 SM, 1000 below, 1000 above, 1 SM horizontal. Class G day below 1,200 AGL: 1 SM, clear of clouds. Class G night below 1,200 AGL: 3 SM, 500 below, 1000 above, 2000 horizontal.

Plain-English Explanation
VFR weather minimums vary by airspace class and altitude. The key ones to memorize: Class B = 3 miles visibility, clear of clouds. Class C/D/E below 10,000 = 3 miles, 500 below/1,000 above/2,000 horizontal from clouds. Class E above 10,000 = 5 miles, 1,000 below/1,000 above/1 SM horizontal. Class G is the most relaxed: 1 mile visibility and clear of clouds during the day below 1,200 AGL. This is one of the most heavily tested topics on every FAA written exam.
