14 CFR 1.1 — General Definitions

Contains all official definitions used throughout the Federal Aviation Regulations, including aircraft categories, classes, and types.

Regulation Text

As used in Subchapters A through K of this chapter, unless the context requires otherwise: "Administrator" means the Federal Aviation Administrator or any person to whom he has delegated his authority in the matter concerned. "Aerobatic flight" means an intentional maneuver involving an abrupt change in an aircraft's attitude, an abnormal attitude, or abnormal acceleration, not necessary for normal flight. "Aircraft" means a device that is used or intended to be used for flight in the air. "Aircraft engine" means an engine that is used or intended to be used for propelling aircraft. It includes turbosuperchargers, appurtenances, and accessories necessary for its functioning, but does not include propellers.

Note: This is an excerpt. Refer to the full regulation in eCFR for the complete text.

Plain-English Explanation

This section is the aviation dictionary. Every time the FARs use a specific term like "aircraft," "night," "pilot in command," or "commercial operator," the legal definition comes from here. Knowing these definitions is critical because FAA exam questions often test whether you understand the precise legal meaning of aviation terms, not the common everyday meaning.
